Court issues second arrest warrant for Ssemakadde
By Juliet Kigongo The Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court on Monday issued a warrant of arrest for Uganda Law Society President Isaac Ssemakadde after he failed to appear for a court hearing. Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi issued the warrant after Ssemakadde failed to appear in court to answer charges of indecently insulting Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Jane Frances Abodo. Court records show that on February 17, 2025, charges were sanctioned against Ssemakadde under Section 113 of the Penal Code Act, and criminal summons were issued for him to appear on January 29, 2025. However, his lawyers cited his illness and a pending High Court ruling, leading the court to reschedule his appearance for February 24, 2025. Read more

Court dismisses Besigye, Lutale habeas corpus application
The High Court’s Civil Division on Monday dismissed a habeas corpus application filed by Dr. Kizza Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, and his aide, Hajji Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya. They had sought release from what they claimed was unlawful detention at Luzira Prison. Judge Douglas Singiza, after initially reserving his ruling, declared the application moot. This was because Besigye and Lutale had since been formally charged with treason in a Nakawa civil court and legally remanded to Luzira. Consequently, the court found their detention now legally justified. Judge Singiza also addressed criticisms from cartoonists and bloggers who had labeled him a “Nazi judge,” but did not impose any costs on the applicants.

On Saturday, Eskom applied Stage 3 power cuts, known locally as loadshedding, effectively cutting 3,000 megawatts to the national grid. “Of the 10 units that we lost overnight, we have essentially returned six units,” Eskom group CEO Dan Marokane told reporters on Sunday. He said five to six units were expected to become operational during the course of the day, bolstering the 3,200 MW of capacity recovered overnight. “We anticipate to get out of this stage by the […]

DPP case: Ssemakadde expected in court
Uganda Law Society President Isaac Kimaze Ssemakadde is scheduled to appear before Buganda Road Magistrates Court on Monday morning, facing charges of insulting the modesty of a woman. On February 10, 2025, Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi declined to issue an arrest warrant for Ssemakadde. This decision followed his lawyers’ explanation that he missed a January 29, 2025, court appearance due to a bad cough. Instead, Kayizzi extended a criminal summons, requiring Ssemakadde to appear on Monday, February 24, 2025. Failure to appear will result in the issuance of an arrest warrant. The case originates from derogatory comments Ssemakadde allegedly made about Director of Public Prosecutions Justice Jane Frances Abodo during a symposium on November 18, 2024. These comments led to […]
