Court to decide fate of jailed lawyer Eron Kiiza next week
Political activist Dr. Kiiza Besigye’s lawyer, Eron Kiiza, will have to wait until Monday, March 3, 2025, to learn the outcome of his appeal after being sentenced to nine months in prison for contempt of the General Court Martial. Kiiza appeared before the High Court, Civil Division, on Tuesday, seeking unconditional release. However, the Attorney General contends that Kiiza’s sentence is lawful, citing the Supreme Court’s confirmation of the General Court Martial’s existence, albeit with limited jurisdiction over service offenses. Johnson Natuhwera, representing the Attorney General, argued that Kiiza had approached the wrong court. He stated that Kiiza should challenge his nine-month sentence in the Criminal Division, not the Civil Division of the High Court. Notably, Natuhwera pointed out that […]

Mubiru’s misfiring KCCA seek Cup redemption against Arua minnows
By Denis Bbosa Ten-time Stanbic Uganda Cup winners KCCA, who last hoisted the prestigious trophy in 2018, arrived in Zombo nearly four days ahead of Wednesday’s Round of 32 clash against little-known Arua based side Kuluva Rainbow, determined to avoid an upset that could seal an already miserable season. Abdallah Mubiru’s side has endured a torrid league campaign, languishing in eighth place on 24 points from 17 matches— a staggering 16 points behind runaway leaders Vipers. With a paltry 16 goals scored in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League, KCCA’s attacking frailties have been glaring, but they cannot afford to drag their goal-scoring struggles into today’s Uganda Cup tie against a potential banana skin opponent they barely know. Musicians release silent album to protest UK’s AI copyright changes
By Reuters More than 1,000 musicians including Kate Bush and Cat Stevens on Tuesday released a silent album to protest proposed changes to Britain’s copyright laws which could allow tech firms to train artificial intelligence models using their work. Creative industries globally are grappling with the legal and ethical implications of AI models that can produce their own output after being trained on popular works without necessarily paying the creators of the original content. Britain, which Prime Minister Keir Starmer wants to become an AI superpower, has proposed relaxing laws that currently give creators of literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works the right to control the ways their material may be used. GBV fuels Uganda’s escalating case backlog
Uganda’s Judiciary is facing a staggering caseload of 1,736,280 cases as of January 2025, with over 43,000 of the cases considered backlog. Chief Registrar Sarah Lang Sui revealed these numbers during the launch of the “Strengthening Criminal Justice Response to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Uganda” initiative on Monday. These figures are subject to change as the Judiciary is currently updating its records. The backlog is a significant challenge, exacerbated by the limited number of judicial officers, currently 689 and the rising number of GBV cases, which make up a large portion of pending cases. Many GBV victims require continuous support throughout the trial and post-trial processes. Additionally, overcrowding in holding facilities hampers the ability to administer timely justice to GBV […]
