Burundi’s army is withdrawing from DR Congo, four sources say
By Reuters Burundian soldiers, who have been fighting Rwandan-backed M23 rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, were pulling out following the fall of the city of Bukavu, four sources, including a Burundian army officer and two U.N. officials, said on Tuesday. M23 seized Goma, the biggest city in eastern Congo, in late January and then took control of South Kivu provincial capital Bukavu over the weekend. “The Burundian troops are withdrawing from Democratic Republic of Congo. A number of trucks filled with military arrived in the country since yesterday” through a border post, the Burundian army officer said. Burundi has had soldiers in eastern Congo for years, initially to hunt down Burundian rebels there but, more recently, to aid […]

Court sets date for hearing Besigye, Lutale release application
The High Court in Kampala has scheduled February 25, 2025, to hear a habeas corpus application filed by Dr. Kizza Besigye’s lawyers, seeking his unconditional release from Luzira Prison. Justice Dr. Darglas Singinza will preside over the hearing. Besigye’s lawyers, led by Erias Lukwago, petitioned the court on February 5, 2025, requesting the release of the veteran opposition leader and his colleague, Hajji Obeid Lutale. This action follows the Supreme Court’s ruling that the Court Martial lacks jurisdiction over civilians, effectively nullifying the charges against Besigye and Lutale. The lawyers are seeking a court order compelling the Attorney General and the Commissioner General of Prisons to explain why Besigye and Lutale remain imprisoned despite the Supreme Court’s ruling. On the […]

Museveni blames hunger strike for Besigye’s weakness
President Museveni on Tuesday broke his silence on the continued detention and trial of veteran politician Kizza Besigye, several days after the Supreme Court blocked the prosecution of civilians in military courts. Museveni stated that no one in the world can lecture his government on reconciliation and forgiveness, responding to online calls for the same. He further attributed Besigye’s weakened condition to his hunger strike, noting that his doctors were allowed to treat and transfer him to clinics outside Luzira Prison. “Dr. Besigye, was on hunger strike. That is part of the cause for his weakness that we could see in the pictures that were in the Newspapers,” Museveni wrote on Tuesday. In a lengthy post on his official X […]

Commonwealth urges Uganda to release Besigye
By Reuters The Commonwealth called on Tuesday for Uganda, a member of the 56-nation group, to release opposition politician Kizza Besigye, saying his detention undermined democracy and human rights. A long-time critic of President Yoweri Museveni, Besigye’s prosecution by a military court and near three-month incarceration for offences including illegal firearms possession has stoked public anger against the government. Besigye, 68, went on hunger strike last week, and he was briefly hospitalised over the weekend, an allied lawmaker said. Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland said the detention of Besigye, his lawyer and an aide undermined “principles of democracy, human rights and the rule of law”, in rare criticism of a member by the group, which evolved out of the British Empire.
