Congo rebels promise security in Bukavu after looting
By Reuters Residents of eastern Congo’s second-largest city on Monday surveyed the aftermath of widespread looting that accompanied the arrival of Rwandan-backed M23 rebels who have pledged to restore order. The M23 fighters moved into the centre of Bukavu on Sunday, marking the Tutsi-led group’s most significant advance since seizing east Congo’s biggest city of Goma in late January. The capture of Bukavu, a commercial hub, and of the strategic airport that services the city in the nearby town of Kavumu dealt a further blow to Kinshasa’s authority and escalated a conflict that has fanned fears of an all-out regional war. Congo’s government has so far stopped short of saying Bukavu was fully under M23 control. Congolese and allied Burundian […]

M23 rebels advance into eastern Congo’s strategic city of Bukavu
By Reuters Rwandan-backed M23 rebels advanced on Sunday into the centre of Bukavu in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, meeting little resistance from government troops, witnesses and the armed group said, as Congo accused Rwanda of ignoring calls for a ceasefire. Rebel commander Bernard Byamungu told Reuters the M23 has had the city under its control since the middle of the day. The rebels have been seeking to seize the commercial hub since taking the city of Goma in late January. Bukavu’s apparent capture deals a further blow to Kinshasa’s authority in the east of the country. The Congolese government said rebels were in Bukavu and accused Rwandan troops of also entering the city. It stopped short of saying the […]

Libya’s first private oil firm grows in eastern commander’s shadows
By Reuters A Libyan company linked to the powerful faction that controls eastern Libya has exported oil worth at least $600 million since May, marking an end to the National Oil Corporation’s monopoly on exports, according to shipping records and U.N. experts. The shipments by the little-known Arkenu Oil Company, which was set up in 2023, are the first by a private Libyan company and mean some of the country’s oil revenue is likely being channelled away from the Central Bank of Libya. Ever since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has been riven by disputes between armed factions and it is largely split, with an internationally recognised government based in Tripoli in the west and a rival […]
