Celebrations in Sudan’s Wad Madani as army takes over strategic city
By Reuters Civilians and soldiers celebrated in Wad Madani, the capital of Sudan’s El Gezira state, after it was recaptured by the Sudanese army from the paramilitary Rapid Support Services, marking a possible turning point in a devastating near two-year civil war. “We are so happy, we can’t express ourselves,” said one woman on Sunday, as soldiers shot into the air and people cheered on the streets. “A whole year we have been squeezed, we haven’t been able to breathe.” The war began in the capital Khartoum in April 2023 over the integration of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Services (RSF). It has created one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, pushing more than 12 million […] The post Celebrations in Sudan’s Wad Madani as army takes over strategic city first appeared on 93.3 KFM.

At least 40 farmers killed in Nigeria’s Borno state, govt says
By Reuters Suspected Islamist militants killed 40 farmers in an attack on the Dumba community in Nigeria’s Borno State on Sunday, a senior state official said on Monday. Initial reports indicate the farmers strayed outside a security corridor set up by the military, venturing into an area known for insurgent activity and strewn with landmines, state commissioner of information Usman Tar said. The militants were believed to belong to the armed group Boko Haram and its offshoot Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), who have been waging a long-running insurgency in northeast Nigeria. Security forced were looking for any farmers who had escaped the attack, Tar added. The post At least 40 farmers killed in Nigeria’s Borno state, govt says first appeared on 93.3 KFM.

Besigye declines to take plea, further remanded
Veteran politician, Dr. Kizza Besigye declined to plead to new charges of treachery on Monday, citing concerns over the General Court Martial’s jurisdiction to try civilians for offenses allegedly committed outside Uganda. This development follows the prosecution’s introduction of a new charge and a new suspect, Captain Dennis Ola, a serving officer with the UPDF Armory Brigade, as a co-accused. Besigye’s lawyers, Erias Lukwago and Martha Karua, argue that the court lacks territorial jurisdiction to try offenses committed beyond Uganda’s borders. They point out that the chargesheet alleges the offenses took place in Greece, Switzerland, and Kenya, where the accused were found with weapons purportedly monopolized by the Ugandan defense forces. Besigye and Lukwago contend that weapons can only be […] The post Besigye declines to take plea, further remanded first appeared on 93.3 KFM.

Ssegirinya sendoff fails to bury Bobi-Mpuuga feud
By AL-MAHDI SSENKABIRWA The final sendoff of Kawempe North Member of Parliament (MP) Muhammad Ssegirinya has failed to bridge the gap between bitterly opposed former National Unity Platform (NUP) party associates. The burial and final farewell to Ssegirinya was viewed as a golden opportunity to provide respite or even temporary truce between NUP party supremo Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, and his former Buganda region deputy Mathias Mpuuga. State slaps new charges against Besigye, Lutale
The state has filed new charges of treachery against Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Kamulegeya Lutale, who are already facing charges related to security, and unlawful possession of firearms, and ammunition. They will also face joint charges with Captain Dennis Ola, a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer attached to the Armoured Brigade. According to lead prosecutor Colonel Raphael Mugisha, the new charges stem from ongoing investigations. The state is amending the charge sheet to include the treachery charge and add Captain Ola as a co-accused. However, defense lawyers are objecting to Captain Ola’s inclusion, arguing that it is a tactic to disguise the court’s potential decision to overrule their objections regarding the court martial’s jurisdiction to try civilians […] The post State slaps new charges against Besigye, Lutale first appeared on 93.3 KFM.

Besigye case: Lawyers seek colleague’s presence
Lawyers representing Dr. Kiiza Besigye, led by Kenyan politician Martha Karua, requested on Monday that the Court Martial should order the production of their jailed colleague, Eron Kiiza, to fulfill his specific role in the case. Kiiza, who was sentenced to nine months in prison for contempt of court, remains listed as one of the advocates for Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya. He has allegedly been assigned a task that no other lawyer can perform. The lawyers argue that without Kiiza’s participation, they will be unable to effectively represent their clients. They are also seeking clarification from the court’s chairman, Brig. Gen. Freeman Mugabe, regarding the validity of the proceedings due to changes in the court’s membership.
