Saudi Arabia scraps hotel licensing fees in bid to boost tourism
BY REUTERS Saudi Arabia decided on Wednesday to cancel fees for issuing commercial activity licenses for hotels, hotel apartments and residential resorts in the kingdom, state news agency SPA reported. The decision, effective Sept. 4, is part of the Tourism Investment Enabler Program that Saudi Arabia launched in March, aimed at making the kingdom a global tourism powerhouse. “This decision comes in line with the goals of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 to make Saudi one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the world”, SPA said. SPA added that the initiative would encourage investors to put more money into the tourism sector, which would increase the industry’s contribution to gross domestic product. IGP Byakagaba slams selective prosecution in corruption cases
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abbas Byakagaba, has criticized both investigators and the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for consistently targeting lower-ranking officers for corruption while allowing senior officials to evade accountability. The meeting aimed to enhance Uganda’s socio-economic transformation through efficient prosecution of offenses. “The two institutions must collaborate and strengthen partnership in order to achieve their objective of contributing towards law and order but by extension towards supporting the development of this country,” he said. “The general public has been frustrated that we go for small fish but ofrecent, we see this trend changing and we […]

MPs urge govt to abandon plans to merge UCDA
Members of Parliament (MPs) on the Agriculture Committee are urging the government to abandon its plans to merge the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) with the Ministry of Agriculture. The committee is set to meet with President Yoweri Museveni at State House to discuss the matter. Kimanya Kabonera MP, Dr. Abed Bwanika, emphasizes that the importance of coffee to the national economy is too significant to be jeopardized by such a merger. He argues that it would undermine specialized efforts in coffee management and hinder the sector’s progress. Bwanika’s comments come in response to the government’s renewed push to complete the rationalization and merger of its agencies as part of a cost-saving initiative and to prevent the duplication of roles […]

BY REUTERS Pope Francis on Wednesday urged political leaders in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, to guard against religious extremism, which he said distorted people’s religious beliefs through “deception and violence”. In his first speech during an ambitious 12-day journey across Southeast Asia, where Christians are broadly a small minority of the regional population, the pontiff said the Catholic Church would increase its efforts toward inter-religious dialogue in hopes of helping tamp down extremism. “In this way, prejudices can be eliminated, and a climate of mutual respect and trust can grow,” the 87-year-old pope said in an address to some 300 politicians and religious leaders at Jakarta’s Merdeka Presidential Palace. “This is indispensable for meeting common challenges, including […]
