IGG launches anti-corruption campaign with posters at police stations

The Inspector General of Government (IGG) has launched a new anti-corruption campaign aimed at raising awareness and combating corruption within government institutions.  The initiative started with the installation of signposts displaying anti-corruption messages at police stations across the Kampala Metropolitan Area. Speaking during a meeting with Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) commandant Richard Echega and senior officers at the Central Police Station (CPS), deputy IGG Dr Patricia Achan Okiria explained that the signposts are part of a broader effort to ensure government services are free from corruption. She said the police is an institution with close public interactions and bears a reputation for high involvement in corrupt practices. The objective, Okiria said is to extend this initiative to all government institutions, sensitizing and raising awareness that services are corruption-free. However similar campaigns at health centres did little to combat corruption in the health sector. She also expressed concern over high-ranking police officers violating the Leadership Code Act by failing to declare their wealth or submitting false declarations. She stressed the importance of accountability at all levels of government. Deputy police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, Luke Owoyesigyire, acknowledged the significance of raising anti-corruption awareness within the police force. However, he said he was unaware of officers failing to declare their assets. "Everyone is supposed to behave and towards corruption. It is a vice that no one should entertain. On our side as police, we should not entertain getting money from members of the public to give them services. Likewise, the public should not give us money to get services from us. So it is basically to make sure that members of the public know that police services are free and failure to that we have put numbers so that the public can report any issue related to us and inform them about the corruption," Owoyesigyire said. According to the IGG’s 2023/24 report, Uganda lost over Shs 30 billion to corruption, and the office received 21,377 corruption-related complaints, with 1,260 originating from the Kampala Metropolitan area. The installation of anti-corruption signposts marks a significant step toward addressing this issue, promoting transparency, and enhancing accountability in both the police force and other government bodies. {loadposition inarticle}

Machete-wielding thugs rob Wakiso businessman of Shs 30m

Unknown assailants armed with machetes and a hammer ambushed and robbed a businessman of Shs 30.6 million along the Nebbi-Paidah road on Thursday morning. The robbery occurred at approximately 5:45 am in Pawung Bida Cell, Central Division, Nebbi Municipality. The victim, Emmanuel Tumwine, a businessman from Wakiso district, was travelling alone in his vehicle, registration number UBP 631D from Paidah to Panyimur when he was attacked. Preliminary police reports indicate that Tumwine was ambushed by attackers riding motorcycles as he approached Jukia Hill. The assailants used a machete and a hammer to break into his vehicle, injuring him in the process before fleeing with the money. Collins Asea, the acting West Nile Region police spokesperson, stated that police responded quickly to the scene and have deployed a canine unit to track the suspects. Asea also advised the public to exercise caution when transporting large sums of money. "It is advisable to use safer means of transporting significant amounts of cash, such as bank transfers or electronic methods. If carrying cash is unavoidable, individuals should avoid travelling alone, especially during early or late hours, and should seek police escort services where necessary," he said. Tumwine is currently receiving treatment at a medical facility in Nebbi Municipality. This incident comes amid a rise in highway robberies along the Arua-Nebbi Highway, where assailants have been targeting vehicles slowed down by pothole-ridden sections of the road, with a focus on bus booths and trucks. {loadposition inarticle}

Uganda Airlines’ new Abuja route to boost bilateral trade, tourism

In line with increasing connectivity across the African continent, Uganda Airlines has added the new route of Abuja to its already existing flight routes. With the airline reaching over 20 destinations, the flight to Nigeria’s administrative capital comes just one year after Uganda Airlines launched its air services to Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub. On September 12, the inaugural flight service to Abuja departed from Entebbe at 4 pm, with a same-day arrival at Abuja Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 6:15 pm. The flagship Airbus A330-800neo aircraft will operate the flights, which will link to the current service to Lagos, on Thursday and Sunday. Speaking at the event, Uganda Airlines CEO Jenifer Bamutaraki noted, “We are excited to launch our service to Abuja, Nigeria, and we’re thrilled because these flights are the second city in Nigeria after Lagos; so, it will be a combined flight. We will be using Airbus for the two routes and combined routes, and the flight number will be UR900. We take great pride in being alive today, witnessing this, and honouring our promise to both Uganda and Nigeria. “Abuja is our second destination in Nigeria and the 14th overall in our network. Its launch underscores our continuing commitment to ease travel across Africa by providing efficient and affordable air services to facilitate business, tourism, and leisure travel,” Bamutraki added. As a result, Uganda Airlines’ new service is important because it addresses the connectivity gap between the administrative capital of Africa’s most populous nation and East Africa. “Through this service, travellers from Nigeria’s central, northern and northeastern regions can seamlessly connect to our services to Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Mombasa, Mogadishu, Mumbai, and Dubai, among others.” Dignitaries such as the state minister for Transport Fred Byamukama, the Nigerian high commissioner to Uganda, Fehintola Adebowale Oyeyemi, and the director general of Civil Aviation Authority, Fred Bamwesigye, attended the event. {loadposition inarticle}
