Judge temporarily pauses Trump’s freeze on grants, loans
By Reuters A U.S. judge on Tuesday temporarily paused part of the Trump administration’s sweeping directive to pause federal loans, grants and other financial assistance, granting a win to advocacy groups who said the policy would be devastating. At a hearing in Washington, D.C., federal court, U.S. District Judge Loren AliKhan ordered the Trump administration not to block “open awards,” or funds that were already slated to be disbursed, until at least Feb. 3. The judge said her temporary ruling was intended to “maintain the status quo.” It does not block the Trump administration from freezing funding to new programs, or require it to restart funding that has already ended. AliKhan scheduled another hearing for Monday at 11 a.m. EST […]

Implications of US aid cuts to Uganda
The Trump administration urged U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) workers to join the effort to transform how Washington allocates aid around the world in line with Trump’s “America First” policy. It threatened “disciplinary action” for any staff ignoring the administration’s orders. A sharply-worded memo sent on January 25 to more than 10,000 staff at USAID offered further guidance to Friday’s “stop-work” directive that effectively put a sweeping freeze on U.S. foreign aid worldwide. Patrick Kamara speaks to Patrick Ocaillap, Prof Augustus Nuwagaba, Dr Aisha Kasolo, and Mr Simon Kaheru on the KFM Hot Seat show about its implications to Uganda.

Minister Lugoloobi testifies in iron sheets case
State Minister for Finance Amos Lugoloobi on Tuesday testified in his own defense before Anti-Corruption Court Judge Jane Okuo Kajuga, maintaining his innocence in the Iron Sheet scandal. Lugoloobi swore on the Bible to tell the truth, with his lawyer, John Isabirye, guiding him through the process. Lugoloobi claimed that the iron sheets were given to him for various purposes, as the sender, the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), did not specify that they were intended for Karamoja. He argued that if the sender intended for the sheets to go to a specific group or person, it should have been indicated on the delivery note, which was left blank. The Minister also stated that it is common practice to […]
