Govt urged to boost HIV treatment funding after US aid cuts
A section of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) has urged the government, through the Ministry of Health, to increase national funding for people living with HIV. This call follows an Executive Order issued on January 20, 2025, by US President Donald Trump to immediately halt all PEPFAR-funded activities in Uganda and globally. Although Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a waiver on January 29, 2025, for life-saving humanitarian assistance, including medical services and food, to African countries, the waiver does not extend to activities involving abortions, family planning conferences, administrative costs, gender programs, transgender surgeries, or non-life-saving assistance. Richard Lusimbo, the Director-General of the Uganda Key Populations Consortium (UKPC), emphasized the need for the government to ensure the availability of food […]

Relative calm has returned to Goma, where the rebel alliance that includes M23 declared a ceasefire for humanitarian reasons starting on Tuesday. But some residents still reported sporadic shooting and looting and the scale of the civilian cost is still emerging after reports of people caught in crossfire, overwhelmed hospitals and bodies lying on the street. Muyaya told a news briefing the number of bodies to be buried “gave an overview of massacres committed in the city”. Goma, east Congo’s largest city […]

CJ Owiny-Dollo urges judges to deliver justice with integrity
Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo on Tuesday urged judges attending the 26th Annual Judges’ Conference in Kampala to deliver justice with integrity, fairness, and without fear or favor. He reminded them that, like doctors who heal lives, judges are healers of conflict and should inspire trust and peace through the justice they administer. Owiny-Dollo’s message comes at a critical time, following the Supreme Court’s landmark decision to ban the trial of civilians in military courts. This ruling has sparked public debate, but the Chief Justice emphasized that judges should fear no one in their adjudications, except God, on whose behalf they render justice. He also encouraged judges to embrace innovation to deliver speedy and timely justice, which is essential for stimulating […]

Congo demands international sanctions ‘to stop Rwanda’
By Reuters The international community must take concrete action and impose sanctions on Rwanda to curb the M23 rebel conflict in eastern Congo and keep the peace in the wider region, Congo’s communications minister told Reuters on Monday. An ongoing escalation has displaced around half a million more people and led to the capture last week of Congo’s largest eastern city Goma, fanning fears of regional wars like those that killed millions between 1996 and 2003, most from hunger and disease. Foreign powers including the U.S. and the European Union have condemned Rwanda’s involvement in the fighting, which U.N. reports have said includes the deployment of thousands of its own troops and weapons in support of the Tutsi-led M23 militia.
