By Reuters Rwandan-backed M23 rebels have seized control of a mining town in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo’s South Kivu province, eight sources said on Wednesday, in an apparent violation of a unilateral ceasefire they declared this week. The capture of Nyabibwe on Lake Kivu takes the rebels a step closer to the provincial capital Bukavu some 70 km (40 miles) south, a city the rebels said last week they had no intention of capturing. M23 announced a ceasefire on Monday. Eight people, including local officials, a civil society representative, rebels and an international security source, confirmed Nyabibwe had fallen to the rebels. “There have been clashes since 5 a.m., and it was at 9 a.m. that the town fell […]

Arsenal lacked composure, says Arteta after League Cup exit
By Reuters Arsenal lacked their usual composure, according to manager Mikel Arteta, as his side bowed out of the League Cup semi-final with a 4-0 aggregate defeat by Newcastle United on Wednesday. Arteta said his team arrived with high expectations that they could overcome a 2-0 deficit from the first leg, but after Martin Odegaard wasted a glorious early chance, they faded. Less than two minutes after Odegaard’s miss, Jacob Murphy left Arsenal with a mountain to climb by converting a rebound after Alexander Isak’s shot had cannoned off the post. “To believe that we could turn it around, we needed to generate momentum, especially in the first half,” Arteta told reporters. “Then we had the moment, two big moments, […]

By Gertrude Mutyaba The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have launched investigations into the source of life-threatening leaflets circulating in the Masaka, Kyotera, and Bukomansimbi districts. Former Kawempe North MP, the late Muhammad Ssegirinya, and Makindye East MP, Allan Ssewanyana, were detained for over 17 months in connection with these murders. Residents report growing fear after discovering the latest threatening leaflets in their communities. Mr. Musa Matovu, a resident of Bukomansimbi, recounted losing ten people in his area during the 2018 machete attacks. He believes the leaflets distributed before those attacks foreshadowed the […]

Lawyers petition High Court over Besigye, Lutale release
Lawyers representing veteran politician Dr. Kizza Besigye on Wednesday petitioned the High Court for the unconditional release of their client and his political aide, Hajji Obeid Lutale, from Luzira Prison. Through their lawyers, including Martha Karua and Erias Lukwago, Besigye and Lutale are seeking a court order compelling the Attorney General and the Commissioner General of Prisons to explain why they have not been released despite the Supreme Court’s ruling. “We have filed an application for habeas corpus before the High Court Civil Division seeking for court to direct the Attorney General and the Commissioner of Prisons to […]
