Rukiga District boss sacks deputy who criticized him over poor service delivery
By Emmanuel Arinaitwe & Obed Kankiriho The Rukiga District Chairman has fired his vice, accusing him of insubordination and breaking the oath of allegiance- in a sacking that comes barely a month after Samuel Niwandinda criticized his boss over service delivery. Rukiga District boss Robert Mbabazi Kakwerere raised the axe on Niwandinda in a February 5 letter through which the chairperson instructed the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to oversee the return of all government property held by the sacked official. “By the powers vested in me under Section 20(a) of the Local Governments Act, I hereby revoke the appointment of Niwandinda as Vice Chairperson and as a member of the district Executive due to insubordination and violation of the oath of allegiance,” Kakwerere […]

Ssemakadde, CJ clash at New Law Year event
Tension ran high at the Annual New Law Year event in Kampala on Friday after Uganda Law Society President Isaac Ssemakadde was denied the opportunity to address attendees, despite receiving an official invitation. The event quickly escalated into a heated confrontation between Mr. Ssemakadde and Chief Justice Alphonse Owiny-Dollo. Mr. Ssemakadde, who had been invited, was not given a chance to deliver his speech. In an attempt to assert his right to speak, he approached the podium while Chief Justice Dollo was delivering his address, demanding that his allotted time be respected. However, the Chief Justice publicly rebuffed Mr. Ssemakadde, calling him a “fool” and criticizing his behavior as inappropriate. The dispute stems from Mr. Ssemakadde’s past public criticisms of […]

Museveni urges judges to extend responsibility beyond courtroom
President Museveni on Friday urged judges to extend their responsibility beyond the courtroom and the parties appearing before them, making decisions that reflect the broader societal values of fairness, equity, and justice. In a speech read by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja at the launch of the New Law Year 2025 in Kampala, the president reminded judges that some disputes brought before the courts are emotionally charged, involving the distribution of estates and ownership of family property. These cases, he said, require a sober judicial mind that considers the rights of all beneficiaries, especially widows and orphans. “In deciding these cases, the courts must be sensitive to the rights of all beneficiaries, especially the most vulnerable ones such as widows and […]

Rwanda accuses Congo of planning large attack
By Reuters Rwanda said on Friday it had proof of an intended major attack by the Democratic Republic of Congo and denied it was fomenting conflict inside its neighbour’s border. Kigali and Kinshasa blame each other for renewed instability in east Congo, where Rwandan-backed M23 rebels have seized the regional capital Goma and are advancing on more territory, with thousands dead and hundreds of thousands uprooted. “We categorically oppose the DRC’s attempts to portray Rwanda as being responsible for its instability in the eastern DRC,” Rwanda’s ambassador to the U.N. in Geneva, James Ngango, told an emergency meeting of the Human Rights Council. “What is clear, however, is the imminent threat the current situation poses to Rwanda. Following the fall […]

CJ Owiny-Dollo condemns Ssemakadde’s attacks on judges, demands apology
Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo on Friday condemned the leadership of the Uganda Law Society (ULS) for its repeated attacks on judges. Speaking at the launch of the new law year, where ULS President Isaac Ssemakadde and his executive were invited guests, Dollo demanded an immediate apology from the ULS leaders to Court of Appeal Judge Musa Sekaana, who was allegedly verbally abused and insulted by Ssemakadde. Earlier, Dollo directed that Ssemakadde would not be allowed to speak at the event until he made amends, breaking with the tradition where the Law Society typically makes remarks. “The President of the Uganda Law Society, Isaac Ssemakadde, will not speak at the Judiciary function until you make amends,” Dollo said.
