African leaders to push for slavery reparations despite resistance
By Reuters African leaders meeting in Ethiopia this weekend are to launch a new push for slavery and colonial reparations, but can expect to be stonewalled by former colonial powers, most of which have ruled out making amends for historical wrongs. While the issue of reparations has gained momentum worldwide, so has the backlash. U.S. President Donald Trump has said he “doesn’t see it (reparations) happening” and many of Europe’s leaders have opposed even talking about it. At the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, leaders plan to shape a “unified vision” of what reparations may look like, from financial compensation and formal acknowledgement of past wrongs to policy reforms. “Reparations is the hot topic in Addis Ababa,” the AU’s […]

Libyan state minister survives assassination attempt in Tripoli, govt says
By Reuters A Libyan state minister survived an assassination attempt when gunmen opened fire on his car in the capital Tripoli on Wednesday, a government statement said. The Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU) strongly condemned the attack in which it said an unknown group had shot directly at the vehicle of the state minister for cabinet affairs Adel Juma as it travelled on a highway. The statement, posted on an official platform, said that Juma’s health condition was stable, and that security authorities had “launched investigations to uncover the circumstances of the incident and track down the perpetrators.” The GNU under Prime Minister Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah was installed through a U.N.-backed process in 2021. Private schools seek tax exemption on science equipment
Private school proprietors are requesting a government tax exemption on all science equipment and textbooks. They argue that this exemption would enable their schools to acquire the necessary resources to effectively implement the new secondary curriculum. These proprietors contend that the skills-based nature of the new curriculum necessitates well-equipped science labs and workshops. Such facilities, they say, are crucial for providing learners with ample opportunities to develop new knowledge through self-learning. Christopher Bwire, Head Teacher of Mpooma Girls’ School, told KFM on Tuesday that the practical focus of the new curriculum requires more school laboratory facilities. “If we are really talking about increasing the number of scientists and promoting science in schools, let’s remove taxes on science equipment and science […]

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Jane Frances Abodo has issued a circular guiding prosecutors on implementing the Supreme Court’s judgment prohibiting the trial of civilians in military courts. Museveni calls for protection of Kigezi wetlands
President Yoweri Museveni on Wednesday directed farmers in the Kigezi sub-region to stop cultivating and fishing in wetlands, noting that they should instead preserve them and their surrounding ecosystems. During his Parish Development Model (PDM) tour of the Kigezi sub-region, Museveni said that farmers living near wetlands can only fish on the banks of swamps, leaving the main wetland and swamp areas untouched to allow water to flow freely. He advised Kigezi residents that maintaining a smooth flow of water in wetland catchment areas will aid irrigation and ultimately benefit farmers. “These wetlands can be used in a better way. You can do fish farming and get much more money but you also preserve the wetlands,” Museveni said. Museveni also […]

MPs demand explanation on new UCE grading system
Uganda’s Parliament on Thursday directed the State Minister for Primary Education, Dr. Moriku Joyce Kaducu, to present a statement explaining the Uganda National Examinations Board’s (UNEB) grading of students in the recently released Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams. This directive followed complaints from MPs, including Kalungu West MP Joseph Ssewungu, Gulu City Woman MP Aol Betty Ochan, and the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi. They expressed shock at receiving numerous calls from teachers and parents seeking clarification on UNEB’s grading system under the new curriculum. Museveni urges Kigezi leaders to prioritise poverty alleviation over politics
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has criticized leaders and residents of the Kigezi sub-region for prioritizing politics over government programs aimed at alleviating household poverty. While commissioning the 132KV Mirama–Kabale transmission line and its associated Kabale substation at Hamuko Village, Igomanda Parish in Hamurwa Sub-county, Rubanda District, as part of his Parish Development Model (PDM) tour on Wednesday, Museveni expressed frustration over the region’s tendency to engage in politicking rather than embracing government initiatives designed to improve livelihoods. The President lamented that many Ugandans, including those in the Kigezi sub-region, continue to live in poverty due to their failure to follow government advice on participating in poverty alleviation programs. He cited initiatives such as the Parish Development Model, Operation Wealth Creation, […]
