One Dead, Several Survive Awach Sub-county Drowning Tragedy
Police Identify Victims of Awach Sub-county Drowning Tragedy Police in Aswa West have identified the Victims of the Tuesday night drowning that happened at Awach sub-county. 54 year old Lucy Labol a peasant farmer died in the fast flowing water, meanwhile other women who were travelling together with her but survived includes; 55 year old Florence Acaa, 40 year old Pamela Amono, 45 year old Beatrice Ajok , Evaline Laker and Denis Ojok. They were all peasant farmers and residents of Paranga Village, Pugwinyi Parish, Awach sub county in Gulu district. David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa West Police Public relations Officer in press Statement said this incident happened on Tuesday at around 7:40 pm. Mudong says, police in Gulu District received a distress call about death by drowning at Agagi stream boardering Awach and Patiko subcounties particularly at Paranga village, Pugwinyi Parish in Awach subcounty, Gulu District. Preliminary information indicates that the deceased, Labol Lucy, and the Survivors were coming back from Patalira market, in Patiko subcounty heaading to their homes but while crossing a flooded fast flowing Agagi river due to heavy rains, they all fell in the water as they attempted to support each other unfortunately for Labol got drowned and died. Further information also says that Denis Ojok struggled and managed to rescue some survivors before making an alarm for help. Since it was night time already, the body of the deceased was retrieved the following morning of 29/04/2026 resting lifeless at the river bank. Mudong said Police team of detectives and other uniformed personnel headed by the Scene of Crimes Officers visited the scene, documented it, statements recorded from survivors as first responders. One of the survivers, Evaline Laker is said to be still in critical condition and Referred to Gulu regional referral hospital for further management.

Gulu District 11th Council Holds Final Sitting, Gives Thanks to God The 11th council of Gulu district have yesterday conducted their last council meeting, crediting God for a good beginning and ending of the 11th council. The 11th council of Gulu district commenced on 19th May 2021 and ended yesterday 30th April 2026, which they say was mixed with great achievements and some challenges as well but God helped them sailed through until the last moment. Speaking during the last full council meeting, the outgoing speaker for Gulu district council who doubles as the woman member of parliament elect for Gulu district, Ayoo Jenneth Phoebe Obol congratulated the members for completing their task successfully, rating the 11th council as the best and stating that nobody can take that credit but God himself. Ayoo advised the 12th council who are coming after her to invest in their personal development, have a side hustle so that they have a good source of livelihood because they cannot depend on the little they get from the council. Ayoo asks the 12th council to fight corruption because the president of the Republic of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni hates corruption but he can't fight it alone, it needs a combined effort. She urges them to be the eyes of the president in fighting corruption. Ayoo asked the 12th council to stay united as they serve and adjust their minds to work with anybody they find in any office. She cautions technical staff that the council is their employer therefore they should respect council and desist from issues of leaving council meetings when they want and coming in anytime they want. Balingtone P Ongwec the male councillor 5 representing the people of Bungatira subcounty in Gulu district says that the 11th council was faced mainly with challenges and a few successes simply because the political head was'nt focused on important issues hence making Gulu district as a whole decline in performance.
