More civic education needed about constitutional, electoral reforms
Professor Suzie Mulwana, the Executive Director of the Julius Nyerere Leadership Center, has called on the government and stakeholders to increase civic education efforts for citizens regarding the proposed constitutional and electoral reforms. Professor Mulwana emphasizes that while politicians and civil society organizations are actively advocating for reforms ahead of the 2026 general elections, many Ugandans lack awareness about the proposed changes. She highlights that the proposals outlined in the position paper by civil society organizations and politicians may not reflect the views of the majority of Ugandans, particularly the youth, who now constitute the largest voting bloc. Professor Mulwana stresses the importance of educating young people about current events in their country to empower them to […]

Scholars poke holes in proposal to let MPs elect president
Scholar and member of the 1995 Constitutional Commission Professor Fredrick Ssempebwa has criticised rumoured proposals of changing Uganda election system to a parliament democracy where MPs elect the president. In 2022, Deputy Attorney General, Jackson Kafuzi, denied claims of changing the election system. Now speaking during a high-level stakeholders conference on constitutional reforms aimed at revisiting the quest for constitutional and electoral reforms held in Kampala, Professor Ssempebwa said that Parliament democracy election system should never be considered. “A top leader should be elected, the president should be elected. For me to stand by, cheer my party and say when you win I walk in. You don’t know my credentials because I may be someone that is greatly disliked by […]

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed the trial of four men before the High Court International Crimes Division for the murder of former state prosecutor Joan Namazzi Kagezi. This revelation comes from a summary of evidence presented to Nakawa Court Chief Magistrate Elias Kakooza. Madrid’s Bellingham banned for two matches after Valencia red card
By AFP Jude Bellingham has been suspended for Real Madrid’s next two La Liga matches after he was sent off against Valencia last weekend, the Spanish football federation said Wednesday. Madrid appealed against his red card but the federation’s disciplinary committee dismissed their complaint that referee Jesus Gil Manzano made an “error” by dismissing Bellingham. The England international, La Liga’s top scorer with 16 strikes, netted moments after the referee blew for full-time in Madrid’s 2-2 draw at Valencia. Bellingham, 20, ran over to the referee insisting the goal should stand and was sent off, with Gil Manzano saying he showed an “aggressive attitude” and was “shouting”. The midfielder misses upcoming La Liga games against Celta Vigo and Osasuna. Real […]

Govt moves to address falling tea prices
Cabinet has directed the Agriculture ministry to draft a national tea policy by May 2024 as prices across the country drastically fall with many farmers in the Kigezi region now uprooting their tea plants. This is part of efforts to address tea quality gaps which are plummeting Uganda’s processed tea price on the international market. On the domestic market last year, the price of a kilogram of green tea leaves dropped from Shs500 to Shs200. The Minister for ICT and National Guidance Dr Chris Baryomunsi also revealed that they are introducing a fertiliser revolving fund that will be capitalized by government, along with tax waivers to struggling factories across the country. “We realized that the tea factories face a number […]

BoU increases central bank rate to 10%
The Bank of Uganda has increased its key policy rate, the Central Bank Rate (CBR) to 10% up from 9.5% during a special monetary policy meeting. Deputy Governor Michael Atingi-Ego told a virtual briefing on Wednesday that the benchmark rate has been increased in a bid to curb inflation and support the battered shilling. He added that core inflation increased to 3.4% in February from 2.4% in January, noting that central bank’s growth forecast for the financial year that ends in June remained unchanged at 6%, but that forecasts for future years had been lowered given tighter monetary policy. “High inflation rates hurt economic growth, leading to significant and permanent reductions in per capita income. Therefore, tightening monetary policy in […]
