Court upholds decision to deny registration of gay rights group
Three justices of the Court of Appeal, led by Deputy Chief Justice Richard Buteera, have upheld a High Court decision that registering organizations promoting LGBTQ activities is illegal. The case originated from a 2016 appeal filed by three gay rights activists: Frank Mugisha, Dennis Wamala, and Joanita Mary Ssenfuka. They challenged the Uganda Registration Services Bureau’s (URSB) refusal to register the name “Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG).” The URSB, in a letter dated February 16, 2016, cited the organization’s objectives as conflicting with public policy and national interests. The activists argued that the URSB’s decision violated their constitutional rights and amounted to unfair treatment. They sued the URSB and sought a High Court order to reverse the decision. However, on June […]

Masaka-Mutukula road construction to begin soon
The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) Executive Director, Ms. Allen Kagina, announced that the Solicitor General cleared the rehabilitation of Masaka-Mutukula Road last week. They are scheduled to sign the contract this week, allowing works to commence in about a month. We should see works begin in about a month or so, the cause of the delay was basically funding,” said Ms Kagina. Her comments addressed a concern raised by MP Charles Bakabulindi, who questioned UNRA’s delay in fulfilling its 2022 promise to construct the road. The Masaka-Mutukula Road is a designated regional road, and the African Development Bank initially committed to financing the project. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused delays in contract negotiations between the government and the financier. […]

Raya is shootout hero as Arsenal reach Champions League quarters
By AFP David Raya was the hero as Arsenal beat Porto 4-2 on penalties on Tuesday to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2010. The teams were locked at 1-1 on aggregate after an absorbing second leg at the Emirates but Raya saved twice in the shootout to break the hearts of the two-time champions. Kenya’s police mission to Haiti put on hold – Official
By AFP Kenya has decided to put on hold plans to send police to violence-wracked Haiti under a UN-backed multinational mission, a top official said Tuesday. The move came after Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry agreed to step aside as armed gangs have taken over much of the Caribbean nation. “There has been a fundamental change in circumstances as a result of the complete breakdown of law and order and the subsequent resignation of the PM of Haiti,” Korir Sing’oei, principal secretary for foreign affairs, told AFP. “Without a political administration in Haiti, there is no anchor on which a police deployment can rest, hence government will await the installation of a new constitutional authority in Haiti, before taking further […]
